Caring for Your Bronze
Caring for Your Bronze
- Cleaning the Bronze Surface
- Remove contaminants: Wipe the bronze surface with a solvent such as xylene or denatured alcohol to remove oils and other contaminants.
- Use gloves when handling: Handle the cleaned bronze with soft gloves to avoid transferring oils from your skin, which can accelerate patina formation.
- Apply a Protective Layer (optional, to preserve the original polished finish)
- Wax: Apply a thin, even coat of paste wax designed for metal surfaces using a soft brush.
- Sealants/Coatings: For a more durable barrier, apply a specialized sealant such as Everbrite, ProtectaClear, or another clear lacquer, following the product’s instructions.
- Apply to a warm surface: When waxing, applying it to slightly warm bronze (preferably warmed by the sun) helps the wax melt and spread evenly.
- Maintain the Protective Layer
- Regular application: For outdoor pieces or those in high-humidity areas, reapply wax or sealants at least twice a year to maintain protection.
- Clean gently: When dusting, use a soft, dry cloth or brush to avoid scratching the protective layer.
- Environmental Considerations
- Indoor vs. outdoor: Indoor bronze may only need annual waxing, while outdoor pieces exposed to the elements require more frequent care.
- Salt exposure: In coastal or salty environments, regular waxing is especially important.
